Locality Manager, Street Outreach Team, Sheffield

Steph Haines SOT

I have always worked with disadvantaged people and I particularly enjoy working with more complex and chaotic young people.

After returning from travelling I decided that I wanted to work in the homeless sector and started applying for jobs, including a Street Outreach Worker role with Framework. The role sounded perfect for me. I remember feeling so welcome at the interview and I was over the moon when I was offered the job. I have since progressed to a Team Leader and I am now the Sheffield Locality Manager.

I currently do a street outreach shift once a week. This involves starting work at 6am, walking around Sheffield to look for and check on rough sleepers. Other than this, my days can really vary from compiling reports to setting up new initiatives like the Women’s Census, or attending networking events or multi-agency meetings regarding complex support cases.

I have received excellent training from Framework as well as from specialist services in Sheffield. We have a Clinical Psychologist who delivers a group session with my team once a month as well as one-to-one support when needed. I also have a mentor within Framework who is a great support.

The job I do isn’t for everyone but Framework is a unique place to work with incredible clients who surprise you every day. You need to be empathetic and compassionate but also resilient and if it’s the right job for you, you’ll never want to leave! I don’t think many other places offer work with such interesting clients in such a supportive organisation.

It is a real privilege to work with people who are rough sleeping. After working with rough sleepers in Sheffield for over five years, they have accepted and trust me, and this feels like an honour.
