Service description

The Centre Place, is a registered charity based within Worksop’s South East ward (part of the wider Bassetlaw district).
It provides a wide range of community centre based drop-in sessions, and one-to-one and group support sessions, targeting vulnerable and disadvantaged groups of young people aged 16-25, and their families including those that are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, young parents, those not in education, employment or training, young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), and young people with mental health issues.
In addition to the community centre services we run, we provide an outreach counselling service providing on-going support to young people experiencing metal health problems. We support and empower young people to make positive changes to their lives, and we facilitate and aid the development of essential life skills enabling young people to reach their full potential.
The support we provide is delivered within the following five main areas of the project:
Drop In sessions – Free information, advice, guidance and support covering housing advice, support in C.V writing, job searching, debt advice, budgeting skills, benefits advice, assistance in securing educational or training placements, and social support; as well as support specific to the issues of the marginalised groups of young people accessing our services. In addition to this we run accredited life skills training and educational and prevention workshops aimed at increasing young people’s knowledge, skills and confidence enabling them to reach their full potential
Rugrats – A support service for young families and young parent’s, running weekly community based group sessions and an outreach family support service.
Worksop Out on Wednesdays (W.O.W) – A support service for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) young people providing one-to-one advice and information as well as and group support.
Thursday Night Group – Provides on-going social education programmes and positive activities for vulnerable young people. Life skills training and workshops are also run within the Thursday evening sessions.
Talkzone – Providing outreach community counselling support services for young people with mental health problems.

Learning opportunities

Multi-disciplinary working including attendance at Child Protection meetings and reviews, core groups, local community forums and team meetings.
Dealing with new referrals and engaging them in service user-led progress planning , monitoring and review; including the continued assessment of need and risk.
Facilitation of daily living skills including income maximisation and budgeting and supporting people in their own homes to enhance their independence.
Working with young people with challenging behaviour, risk taking behaviour, crisis intervention and conflict management.
Facilitating opportunities to develop enhanced confidence, self esteem and skills of young people, as well as their existing relationships to reduce isolation and low self esteem.
Experience of advocating on behalf of service users with other service providers and organisations.
Practice within the principles and legislation of anti-discrimination, anti-oppressive practice and equal opportunities.
Gaining an understanding of how statutory and voluntary services work together and partnership working.
Knowledge of relevant legislation such as Welfare Reform, housing legislation, child protection and safeguarding, data protection, vulnerable adults, etc.
Report writing, systematic record keeping and the ongoing monitoring of services.
Opportunities to apply relevant theories.
Community outreach work.
Working as part of a team as well as the development of individual practice.

Additional information

A car driver would be preferential and parking is available.
The centre operates on some evenings, so the student will be required to work a couple of evenings per week, with occasional weekend work.
