Marking World Sustainability Day: October 26th

Andy Shields, Projects & Partnerships Manager

Three surprisingly sustainable ways you and your business can help end homelessness and tackle disadvantage.

To mark World Sustainability Day on Saturday, October 26th, here are three surprisingly simple and sustainable ways you and your company can address homelessness while helping the environment.

We’ll start by looking at our Furnishing Futures programme, launched in April 2024. This programme offers businesses and organisations the opportunity to recycle unwanted household or office furniture and support people in need.

In the interests of sustainability, some of the information below has been recycled🙂

1.            Recycle, repurpose and transform lives – Furnishing Futures provides a cost-free sustainable solution for companies disposing of ex-display, returned or end-of-line household and office furniture. Donate your unneeded mattresses, microwaves and bedside tables to Framework and we will give them a new lease of life by providing them directly to someone in need. In return you get an impact report detailing the environmental benefits of recycling your goods and how your support has helped. You avoid costly and environmentally damaging waste disposal and simultaneously improve someone’s chances of maintaining their tenancy by helping transform an empty flat into a welcoming home. Companies already making a difference include Lace Market Hotel, Vale Clearances and Collecteco.

To learn how you can help recycle, repurpose and transform lives you can view a list of items we always need in our Furnishing Futures information pack

2.            Donate your excess IT and help bridge the digital divide – Framework’s digital inclusion project invites you to donate your unneeded phones, laptops and other electrical items to enable homeless and vulnerable people to access digital technology and online services. Your support can enable people to stay safe, keep in touch with friends and family, develop their digital skills, gain confidence and improve their employment prospects. Funded by The Access Foundation, the project has received support from organisations including Nottingham Trent University, Domestic & General, Deloitte and Go Cardless. To discover how Nottingham based company Staffline helped people across the East Midlands gain digital skills and access technology, read our blog here. You can find more information about the project by visiting our dedicated website: access4all.uk.

3.            Be on trend and help end homelessness – In 2024 Framework launched its own sustainable fashion brand with all sales going directly towards our work supporting people in need, so you can be on trend and help end homelessness. Products are made with natural and sustainable materials and we only make them after an order is placed, so there’s no overproduction, no waste and no unsold stock. Items are shipped in plastic-free reusable packaging and when they’re no longer wearable you can scan a QR code inside the label and return them to be re-spun into a new product. Find out more about our sustainability credentials here.
