Join us for a powerful movie screening and Q&A

Jade White, Events and Digital Marketing Fundraising Officer

This year, to launch our Winter Appeal, we will be hosting an exclusive film screening of Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son, which highlights the issue of rough sleeping in the UK.

This special event will be taking place at Broadway Cinema on Sunday 6th October at 12pm.

In addition, Director Lorna Tucker and Earl Charlton (who slept rough with Lorna and also features in the film) will join us on the day for a post-screening Q&A.

Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son is a documentary directed by Lorna Tucker, offering a poignant window into the reality of homelessness and serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for perception changes of homelessness in society. This film delves deep into the lives of individuals living on the streets and those further along their journey to being housed, weaving together narratives that are both heart-wrenching and hopeful.

The scenes depicted in the film will be familiar to everyone who has walked through the streets of any city or town in the UK. Yet what sets this film apart is its ability to ground these experiences in the past, present and future of its characters’ lives, balancing tragedy and hope. Amidst the struggles, the film showcases the resilience and strength of people who are homeless and challenges the stereotypes of ‘powerless victims’ or ‘agents of their own failings’.

Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son boldly asserts that the issue of homelessness goes beyond just not having a home and delves into the systemic issues, such as distrust in a failing system and the abuse or neglect often suffered by many individuals that lead them to the streets. It calls for a holistic approach to tackling homelessness, one that addresses the underlying issues such as access to sufficient mental health support, counselling, and lack of affordable housing. The current lack of funding and support is exacerbating the issue, as seen by the rough sleeping snapshot figures released yesterday and pushes more people into desperate situations.

Throughout the film the solution to homelessness is presented time and time again: prevention is better than a cure. As Big Issue founder John Bird states ‘Why put an ambulance at the bottom of a cliff instead of a fence at the top?’. This metaphor underscores the film’s exploration of the systemic issues that contribute to homelessness, emphasising the need for interventions that address these root causes. By erecting metaphorical ‘fences at the top’, such as affordable housing, access to mental health services and support for those facing financial hardship, society can prevent individuals from falling into homelessness in the first place.

This powerful and thought-provoking film challenges the viewer to confront their perceptions of homelessness. It serves as a rallying cry for change, urging society to provide the support and action needed to help individuals rebuild their lives.
