World Homeless Day – 10.10.2024
As we mark World Homeless Day, we are experiencing yet another rise in the rough sleeping figures across the East Midlands. A conservative estimate puts the increase at 35% compared to a national rise of 27%. However, our Nottinghamshire team reported a rise of 167% in August.
Against this backdrop, we are also facing a shortfall in the funding needed to keep our Street Outreach Teams at full capacity. Framework needs to raise £189,122 to maintain the status quo. We actually need to raise more if we are to meet the demand we are seeing every day, 365 days a year.
On the 6th of October, Framework launched its Winter Appeal—SOS—Save Our Street Outreach Services—with the Nottingham premiere of Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son, Lorna Tucker’s powerful documentary exploring the lives of people sleeping rough.
Now a successful filmmaker, Lorna Tucker was once a teenage runaway sleeping rough on the streets of London. For this frank, forceful and inspiring documentary, she returns to her former haunts and speaks to current and former homeless people about why, 25 years later, record numbers of people are still reduced to living on Britain’s streets.
The film particularly highlights the plight of women who sleep rough. I am passionate about raising the profile of this issue; women are often hidden from view and unable to access vital services because of the need to stay safe and reduce the risk of physical abuse and sexual harassment.
Join me in making a difference in the lives of homeless people everywhere.
