Life spiralled out of control
Scott was a car salesman aged 19 when he bought a house with his partner however the relationship broke down, they separated and sold the house, after which Scott struggled with drug addiction that created barriers with his family. Struggling with his mental health Scott took a year off work but spent a lot of time at the pub “getting in with the wrong crowd”. He began shoplifting and was caught drink-driving.
Things spiralled out of control in 2020 and Scott became homeless without a support network. Sometimes he got overnight shelter at The Lighthouse in Scunthorpe but this was never guaranteed and he slept rough for nine months. In February 2021, with help from his support worker at We Are With You, Scott was housed at Framework’s Anvil House hostel and then in July he moved to a flat provided by the Rough Sleeper Accommodation Service which has made all the difference.
Scott says: “I felt safe at Anvil House but I lacked a sense of permanency and struggled to think about the future. Being surrounded by other people struggling with addictions like me also didn’t help. Now I’m off the drugs I feel I can move forwards. I’m paying off my debts and as soon as that’s sorted, I can move to my own place and get on with my life.”
