Advice and day centres.

What are advice and day centres?

Advice and day centres are services where people can drop in for quick support around homelessness and other related issues such as drugs. It also refers to outreach services which seek out homeless and vulnerable people who may not normally seek help themselves.

How can it help?

Drop-in and outreach services provide a way for people to access support that they may not normally, this is because no expectations are placed on service users to use a day centre and the services they provide (other than to respect the rules of the centre).  It takes a while to build trust and rapport with someone who may have been sleeping rough for an extended period of time, or who has mental health, drug or alcohol problems or a combination of them. Once someones confidence is built up it is much easier to get them thinking about addressing their immediate problems.  Once this is achieved service users can then begin to engage with other services which can directly help them.
